If you're shopping around for the perfect fence one question you are surely asking yourself is which is better, wood or vinyl? There is no one right answer to this question as wood and PVC are both great choices but one may be more suitable to your needs, lifestyle and budget than the other. To determine which would be better for your project there are a few things to consider...
Can you perform maintenance?
Wood fencing requires a bit of maintenance over time from normal weather damage. Though the maintenance is not extensive it can be a negative to those considering a wood fence or structure. Cellular PVC (vinyl) on the other hand is virtually free of maintenance because its synthetic materials do not rot or corrode due to water or the weather. So if you aren't interested in periodic repairs down the line then PVC is your way to go.
Are you going for a rustic look?
If you are going for that classic post and rail or rustic look then you will probably prefer the look of natural white cedar wood. Though cellular PVC is highly advanced you simply cannot achieve the look of natural (unpainted) wood. If you love the rustic look but are looking to have your fence painted a color then cellular PVC is still an option - when painted cellular PVC is almost identical to natural wood.
Are you on a budget?
If you are looking for the more inexpensive option then you would likely benefit from a wood structure. Up front wood is the more inexpensive option compared to cellular PVC and iron fencing. But when you factor in the longevity of cellular PVC that actually becomes the more budget-conscious choice in the long run because it lasts longer than wood.
How often do you change up your look?
If you are a homeowner that likes to change up the look of your home every few years you might benefit from a wood fence. Though cellular PVC fencing lasts longer its only worth it if you are going to go the distance with it. If five years down the line you decide you want a different look to your yard you will feel better (or at least your wallet will) parting with a more inexpensive wood fence.
